Dementia Care: A Global Dilemma and an Unexpected Solution
The struggle to find quality care for dementia patients in their final stages is a heart-wrenching reality for families, often compounded by the staggering costs. This crisis is particularly acute in the UK, where weekly fees for private care homes reach £1400 ($A2850), and nursing homes with on-site nurses can be even more expensive.
But here's where it gets intriguing: families are now exploring unconventional destinations for care, with Thailand emerging as a surprising haven. Known for its affordable dental and cosmetic procedures, Thailand is now attracting families seeking compassionate dementia care.
While Australia's situation is less dire than the UK's, the costs of residential care for dementia patients are still substantial. These include daily fees, means-tested care fees up to $400 per day, and accommodation costs. The latter depends on the patient's financial status, care provider, and room quality, with options for daily fees or refundable deposits.
The financial relief of moving a patient from Australia to Thailand might not be as significant as for UK residents. However, other factors like climate, accommodation, staff support, and around-the-clock care make it an appealing choice for some families.
One such family is that of Arthur (name changed), whose former wife, Brenda, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's eight years ago. They discovered Care Resort Chiang Mai, a unique care home within a four or five-star resort with 70 villas. The resort was founded by Peter Brown, a UK expat who, after his mother's Alzheimer's diagnosis, transformed 20 villas to cater to dementia patients and those recovering from strokes and surgeries.
Brown's motivation is profound: "I don't believe any relatives want to send their parents abroad. Dementia patients need time, which clashes with the Western lifestyle. Thailand offers affordable staff and a culture that reveres the elderly."
Arthur's wife initially had her own villa but has since moved to 24-hour care. Tourists still occupy the other villas, creating a unique community where patients and visitors interact and dine together.
The resort boasts vast gardens with hundreds of trees and a lake, offering a serene environment for walks and relaxation. Patients engage in various activities, from arts and crafts to games, singing, and supervised swimming. They also enjoy regular excursions for sightseeing and shopping.
The resort's philosophy is to ensure patients live a fulfilling life despite dementia. Arthur praises the staff for their exceptional care, questioning why anyone would opt for Australian care, which he deems inadequate.
Another satisfied family is that of John Chalmers from New South Wales, whose father, diagnosed with advanced dementia, relocated from Scotland to Chiang Mai. Chalmers attests to the high-quality care his father receives, including a suitable diet, an active lifestyle, and a well-equipped room with grab rails and a 24-hour emergency call button.
The resort's model of care has gained international recognition, winning an award for the best Alzheimer's care globally three years ago. However, relocating to Thailand requires a one-year visa, renewable annually, with eligibility criteria including age (50+) and financial stability. A deposit of 800,000 Thai Baht ($38,000) is needed in a Thai bank account at least two months before applying, and full-board daily care costs around $5400 per month.
While Thailand's dementia care may not suit everyone, it's an option worth exploring, especially for those facing inadequate local support or needing to care for elderly relatives in Europe with dementia. And this is the part most people miss—the cultural shift in caregiving that Thailand offers, where the elderly are revered, could be a game-changer for dementia patients worldwide.
